Visual FX Artist

Visual FX Artist

General Description
Robot Entertainment, the independent developer of Orcs Must Die! and Hero Academy, is looking for an experienced and talented FX artist to join its staff. This individual will be key in taking Robot’s games to the next level by creating special effects that will bring depth, refinement, and style to our gameplay.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Have the experience and the knowledge base needed for creating a variety of particle effects to be used in games. From environment ambience to impact effects, the FX artist is responsible for making every aspect of the game look better.
  • Have 3ds Max and animation experience to help bring ideas to life with animated geometry effects that can be exported into the game.
  • Have proficiencies and a deep understanding in creating particle effects in the Unreal 3 engine.
  • Have an exceptional understanding of Photoshop and/or After Effects for creating textures and effects sequences.
  • Be able to bring together creativity, advanced knowledge, and passion for visual effects to communicate complexity in ways that are simple yet visually compelling.
  • Have a good foundation comprised of both strong technical understanding and artistic knowledge. Must be as comfortable editing data files in xml as you are painting in Photoshop or animating in 3ds Max.
  • Be a great communicator, with the ability to collaborate across designers, programmers, and artists to bring visual effects within the project’s technical parameters and push the boundaries of the visual design.
  • Be self-motivated, with a strong ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
  • Must have shipped at least one title while in an Visual FX Artist role.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Have experience with art pipelines that support Unity
  • Possess additional knowledge in motion graphics and potential storyboarding experience.
  • Have a passion for games and game development; the candidate must possess a deep knowledge of the freedoms as well as limitations of visual fx in game engines.
  • Have experience with the creation of next-gen shaders and materials.

The ideal candidate…

  • Is a team player who enjoys collaborating with other artists, designers, and programmers.
  • Possesses a solid understanding of the processes involved in getting art assets into game engines, and can then optimize those assets for both visual quality and performance.
  • Has a passion for video games and a solid understanding of game development.

Robot Entertainment, Inc. was founded in 2009 by long-time veterans of Ensemble Studios. In 2010, we released the AIAS Strategy Game of the Year in Orcs Must Die! In 2011, we followed up with its sequel, Orcs Must Die! 2. Also in 2011, we released the AIAS Mobile Game of the Year in Hero Academy. Most recently, we published Echo Prime on iOS.

We will continue to make great games. It’s time that we put them on a bigger stage. That’s where you come in.

Robot seeks a Director of Marketing. You love games. More importantly, you know how to market games. You have experience with PC and mobile games and free-to-play business models. You go to sleep at night thinking about how to make existing players happy. You wake up in the morning imagining ways to attract new players.

You are comfortable at the center of the action, working closely with the development team, the Robot executive team, a roster of agencies, as well as our global publishing and distribution partners.

You can make one marketing dollar feel like a hundred bucks. You understand that the digital games business is not just about North America. You have a metaphysical connection with customers in Sri Lanka.

You can plan and execute “must see” game demo booths at shows like PAX and Gamescom. You give a game studio’s Community Manager as much respect as its best engineer.

The individual that fills this big role will have full responsibility for creating and executing marketing strategy and tactical plans to grow Robot Entertainment’s games globally.

This role is not for slide deck creators or conference circuit veterans. Robot Entertainment is still relatively small with very big ambitions. Your determination, passion and laser-focus on results will help us get there.

Big Stuff To Do

  • Develop, manage, execute and analyze global marketing strategies and go-to-market plans for all of Robot’s games
  • Coordinate marketing strategies and plans with publishing and distribution partners globally
  • Develop and manage brand strategies and product positioning
  • Manage the production of breakthrough creative for advertising and all visual communications
  • Lead all PR and corporate communications for Robot and its products
  • Own the look and feel of the Robot and game-specific websites
  • Own the budget for all marketing
  • Create customer acquisition and retention campaigns and manage the life cycle of players
  • Analyze customer behavior data generated from our games, understand it and respond to it
  • Work closely with product development teams to both understand our games and provide a voice for the customer
  • Plan memorable game demos at big industry events
  • Manage a team of a community manager and forum moderators
  • Grow a Marketing department with the scaling success of our game franchises

Big Stuff You Have

  • BS/BA degree at a minimum
  • Minimum of 8 to 10 years of marketing experience, with at least 5 years of meaningful experience in game marketing, and demonstrated leadership on at least one released game
  • Demonstrable quantitative experience, comfort and fluency with analytics
  • Experience managing and leading others
  • Passion for and love of games

System Administrator Team Lead

General Description
Robot Entertainment is looking for an experienced system administrator with a broad base of expertise to join its staff.  This person will be responsible for supporting the hardware and software infrastructure for a new on-line gaming operation. As the environment grows this person will help build and lead a team of system administrators who will insure the successful operation of a 24×7 data center environment. This position will work closely with Robot’s internal software development team to provide feedback on and help implement software and procedures that will be used to manage and monitor the data center operations.

Responsibilities Include

  • Build deployment management of game engine components and subsystems;
  • Provide feedback to software development team on tools used to manage the on-line gaming environment;
  • Installation and maintenance of server and network hardware and related software patches;
  • Configuration and management of the monitoring and alerting system, “Nagios XI” ;
  • Monitoring of the data center environment;
  • Triage issues and resolve or escalate as needed;
  • Insure backup and recovery plans are up-to-date and functional;
  • Maintain system documentation insuring it is accurate and current;

Required Skills & Experience

  • Microsoft Windows Server (versions 2008 through 2012-R2 at a minimum) system and Hyper-V virtual machine administration;
  • Microsoft Active Directory domain administration;
  • Microsoft Windows Server performance monitoring and problem resolution;
  • Enterprise Linux system administration (Ubuntu and CentOS at a minimum);
  • Linux server performance monitoring and problem resolution;
  • Nagios XI (or similar) administration;
  • Network administration including Layer 2 switching, VLANs, link aggregation, Layer 3 routing;
  • Enterprise firewall and load balancer management;
  • MySQL/Percona – Master/slave clustering;
  • MongoDB clustering;
  • Experience managing hybrid cloud/dedicated host server environments;
  • Experience managing large server and network hardware build-outs ;
  • A minimum of five (5) years IT experience in the above.

Desirable Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate…

  • Plays and enjoys games on multiple platforms;
  • Has a working knowledge of Windows and Linux script development (PowerShell, Bash, Python, etc.);
  • Is familiar with Microsoft software development technologies (Visual Studio, C#, etc.);
  • Has supported applications leveraging MongoDB as a data store;
  • Has participated in very large scale client-server application deployments;
  • Has experience using a source code control solution;
  • Ability to learn new technology quickly using freely available on-line resources;
  • Possesses good written and oral communication skills;
  • Takes ownership and is a self-starter;
  • Possesses the ability to work as part of a team.

Education Requirement

  • BS/BA/MS degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
